What weighs as much as a golf ball, lives under the snow, hibernates in winter and is absolutely adorable? Critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums are literally one of the coolest animals that call Victoria home. ☃ Keepers take care of these tiny possums in a special climate-controlled breeding ‘fridge’ at Healesville Sanctuary, bringing in snow from nearby mountains to make sure they feel at home. Join us in the lead up to National Threatened Species Day on September 7 as we shine a spotli

It's time to go lights out to help save mountain pygmy-possums! 💡 High up in the Australian Alps lives a tiny creature called the mountain pygmy-possum. Part of their diet is delicious bogong moths. But lights in the city can distract moths from finding their way home to the mountains, leaving our tiny possums without any food 😢 Thankfully we can all help. Simply by turning our lights out at night. In our new book, Tiny Possum and the Migrating Moths, we follow Possum as she fills up on bogong

Amazing news! Just today. 2 hours ago! New critically endangered mountain pygmy possum joeys…. YAY!!! It goes to prove that mountain pygmy possums don’t need to hibernate to breed. Our stud male will now be promptly removed, and we’ll give this wonderful Mum some peace and quiet to raise her brood of four. It’s so important to pouch check females regularly. Now, we will leave her undisturbed for 5 weeks. Not a peek, not a bump…..total peace. Any disturbance from now on could cause her to reject

An epic triumph today for a tiny endangered creature. The mountain pygmy possum is surging back to healthy population numbers in Snowy Mountains in the Kosciuszko National Park. More than 950 adults are estimated to be in the wild up from 700 following the Black Summer Bushfires in 2020. Conservationists hope their management strategies will protect the species. #possum #endangeredanimal #marsupial #pygmy #australia #conservation #conservationist #7NEWS | 7NEWS Australia

This has been an unbelievable breeding season for our critically endangered mountain pygmy possum colony. We believe over 20 babies have been born, plus more on they way. With only 2000 left in the wild, and captive breeding knowledge, information, data and success is vital for this species survival. Our NDIS funded Zoo Crew program helped with the success of this year’s amazing breeding results. Perhaps being neurodiverse can be a super power! Couldn’t have done it without our fabulous zoo crew

Lights off for the Mountain Pygmy-possum – a message of support from the Minister for the Environment, the Hon Sussan Ley MP. The Mountain Pygmy-possum is Australia’s only hibernating marsupial and sleeps under the snow in the Australian Alps during the winter. When the Pygmy-possums wake up from their winter hibernation, they are hungry for Bogong Moths. Over recent years, there has been a decline in the Bogong Moth populations, which is a big concern for the endangered Pygmy-possum. During spr

Meet the endangered mountain pygmy-possum (Burramys parvus), one of NSW's most adorable and unique threatened species. First discovered as a fossil and thought to be extinct for 70 years, these special little marsupials remain under threat due to climate change, habitat loss and predation. Thankfully, the #SavingOurSpecies program is working to secure the future of the mountain pygmy-possum and over 1000 more of NSW's threatened plants, animals and ecological communities. Endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums have been spotted by remote cameras at emergency food and water stations in fire-affected parts of Kosciuszko National Park. The cameras also caught some other thirsty animals, including skinks, antechinus and a hungry brushtail possum utilising the stations, which will continue to be monitored by Threatened Species Officers over the coming months. #NSWParks | NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service
