On World Science Day for Peace and Development we remember Linus Pauling, a chemistry laureate who went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Together with other scientists, Pauling spoke and wrote against the nuclear arms race, and was a driving force in the Pugwash movement. In 1959, Pauling drafted the famous 'Hiroshima Appeal', the concluding document issued after the Fifth World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs.
